much better

2 very lame weeks being mildly depressed. Finally out of it now. It was probably partially due to having two letters of intent for grants turned down.
I’m working on two very overlapping presentations that I’ll be giving in Toronto next week and after being completely unenthusiastic about it for 2 weeks I’m finally psyched about it. I’m going after the jugular of the infrastructure ideas I’ve been batting around for over 2 years. It’s not complicated at all. And I feel really good about bringing these ideas to the two audiences I’ll be addressing. I know that people are already thinking them so I’ll just be in the position of saying aloud what’s in their head - which is always gratifying.

Said the Gramophone is providing a wonderful soundtrack to work by.

update: have to share this song. only available for a while

I really miss my roommate. Tracey just sent me a killer picture of him in India. It feels like most of my friends are really far away.

write over there

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007

I’ve been doing some writing over at LocationPortals. It feels really good - both because it’s fun, and because it’s a relief to stop feeling guilty about *not* writing there. The one thing really wanted to highlight was Aaron’s recent post which I wrote about. I really enjoyed it.

Papernet (direct link)

He talks about bags of holding, moleskin, “small pieces of paper loosely joined”, and paris. Not freakin bad.

[howdtheyvote-developers] Nearly done…

Cory Horner to howdtheyvote-d.
Jan 4
Well, my holidays are now over but I did manage to find a fair bit of time to make some progress. As of tonight the Hansard parser is essentially complete — it needs only to catch a few more special cases and will be able to refresh the entire session in about 5 minutes flat. I’ve noticed quite a few fixes being applied to the Hansard document, so this new parser will weave in the updates as they appear on parl.gc.ca.

Besides that, we only need a quick script to associate the votes already in the database with their respective bills and we’re ready to publish :)

Cheers,
Cory.

HowdTheyVote.ca

I absolutely adore what Cory’s doing and simultaneously can’t believe that there aren’t more people working on this project with him and on similar projects (like on the other provincial handsards…).

I’ve talked to Cory and he could use some help with hosting, so we’re trying to get on that at ISF…

re-call for volunteers at Atwater Media project

Monday, January 8th, 2007

We’re still looking for a few good geeks to help us out in the new year. The requirements have changed slightly though, now we’re looking for people who are interested in leading short workshops on specific skills, less time commitment on your end. If you think you have some time and some interest in being a volunteer media trainer let me know. If you can think of anyone else who ‘d be interested please pass them this message thanks,

Miriam

Call for Volunteers

The Atwater Library Digital Literacy Project is looking for volunteer mentors for our new youth media program. Are you a blogger, video-maker, audio-producer, or digital photographer? Put your talents to good use in a progressive project that will reward you with teaching experience and curriculum development skills. The program is looking for volunteer mentors to help teach kids and teenagers skills in various creative new media. We’ll show them how things work and help them produce a final product: a hit song, a short film, an animation produced with Flash or made with magnets – if you know it, we can help you teach it. Workshops will begin mid-February and run until April 2007. Send us your CV and tell us a bit about what you’d like to teach. Our email address is volunteer@atwaterlibrary.ca. If you want to be involved during this winter’s session please send us your CV no later than January 17th.

Project Description

We want to assemble a squad of the city’s best new media experts – filmmakers, web designers, audio engineers, Flash designers, bloggers, digital photographers, video game producers, etc. – who are at the ready to help teach and assist with teaching Montreal kids who might not otherwise get the chance to learn new creative technologies. DLP volunteer mentors will help create workshops and lessons that will give kids hands-on knowledge with end results they can show their family and friends. Your contributions and lesson plans will become a resource for future use.

Volunteer Commitment

We’ll need lots of your enthusiasm, lots of your knowledge, and a bit of your time. As a volunteer mentor, you’ll:

* Get to rub elbows with other new media geniuses and learn some techniques at a mentor-training workshop at the Atwater library.
* Learn how to write fun and easy to implement lesson plans for skill-building workshops that will be added to the library’s workshop repository.
* Collaborate and learn from our staff workshop coordinators, in advance of any workshops you teach or help teach, to develop exciting ideas and approaches.
* Gain teaching experience.
* Get a chance to get creatively involved with your community.

In exchange, we expect our volunteer mentors to:

* Be available for scheduled meetings with workshop coordinators prior to any workshops that you’re going to be teaching (don’t worry, we’ll warn you well in advance).
* Arrive punctually and be respectful of coordinators, other mentors and the workshop participants.
* Respect any rules, regulations or disciplinary systems used within the groups in which you are teaching.
* Treat all project participants with respect and integrity.

(Which, of course, will be no big deal.)

Thanks very much for your time and attention,
John, Hannah and Miriam

Results 1 - 10 of about 2,070 for “Autistic Liberation Front”

That wouldn’t have happened without the net. The group was too dispersed to be able to get to this point. Not that this is necessarily a good development. It’s easy for all kinds of people to identify with all kinds of stuff, good and bad, but it’s sure interesting.

This is pretty neat from a NYTimes article

“We don’t have a disease,” said Jack, echoing the opinion of the other 15 boys at the experimental Aspie school here in the Catskills. “So we can’t be ‘cured.’ This is just the way we are.”

From behind his GameBoy, Justin Mulvaney, another 10th grader, objected to the program’s description of people “suffering” from Asperger’s syndrome, the form of autism he has.

“People don’t suffer from Asperger’s,” Justin said. “They suffer because they’re depressed from being left out and beat up all the time.”

But I’m not sure about this:

“The effort to cure autism, they say, is not like curing cancer, but like the efforts of a previous age to cure left-handedness…”:

The people I know that have Asperger’s definitely are hampered in their ability to achieve their goals.

I heard Mozart and the Whale wasn’t a bad flick. Looking forward to renting it soon.

update: strikethroughed stuff because i realized that I wasn’t going to be able to say anything nuanced enough about the subject.

new article out

Sunday, December 17th, 2006

the article we wrote for linux journal is out. Linux Journal edition 153. It’s not public though, ya gotta buy it.

I’m pretty happy to have written two articles (other one is here) in the last year for LJ. I wouldn’t have imagined it.
