my feet hurt. and I realized that I need new clothes to go with my new shoes. Well, actually Alison pointed that out (jerk). But I’m happy to be back and I’m enjoying the final cracin workshop. It’s been a wonderful large family to be involved with over the last 3 years. I have to post about it and about the conference as soon as I finish some work that I have to do this aft.

I … wish I lived in toronto?

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

so weird to say that. But this blows me a way. Gabe was telling me a bit about it last week when we hung out.

via BoingBoing : Toronto Transit Camp is a limited-attendance one-day summit on the best way to reform Toronto’s public transit system. It appears to have been organized independently of the Toronto Transit Authority, and will be run like BarCamp and other “unconventions,” where the attendees suggest and mount their own programming items.

An ad-hoc gathering at the Gladstone Hotel of designers, transit geeks, bloggers, visual artists, tech geeks and cultural creators passionate about transit in Toronto and the TTC. It is a platform for Toronto’s talented design community and enthusiastic transit users and fans to demonstrate their creativity and contribute to a better way for Toronto’s transit system. The content and ideas generated in this open unconference will be delivered to the TTC for their consideration in their work.

Meanwhile, Julien hosts a good discussion about Montreal’s geek community and why not that much cool stuff happens here. I love Evan’s comments.

The transitcamp reminds me of Jo Walsh’s work. She’s totally fascinated by these issues. Checking out her blog, coincidentally, her last entry is on the London Underground and the Oyster system.

stuff from ethan

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007

couple things from ethan’s blog.
FirstLife

post on OLPC on the epistomological aspect of the project. (a long time ago I called it epistemological imperialism. had a conversation about that with my aunt in the car this morning).

“When I’ve expressed my concerns that the devices are subversive to teacher’s authority in the classroom and that some teachers might be led to actively thwart laptop use in classrooms, OLPC software and content President Walter Bender has responded, “That’s why it’s a laptop.” In other words, if the schools are broken pedagogically, at least curious learners will have the chance to explore at home with their human-powered, self-meshing machines.”

yikes.

Mina launched

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007

Mina is launching his new social networking service.

trendmill

it’s a service around fashion. It’s a good idea and I hope it works. Certainly it has a clear future in terms of revenue- as opposed to step 1) build website, 2) ??? , 3) profit!

(Mina’s the guy that started up ISF with David and I. He’s unbelievable.)

if you lived in toronto

your hacknights too would be written up in the national newspaper and in boingboing. :-p

Pack up your modem in your old kit bag
A local activist’s portable hot spot brings the Internet in a backpack

“Mediashop” refers to HAL. Which, incidentally, Pascal tells me is being set up in Nantes in France.

I’m just jealous. it sounds like lots of fun.

30

Wednesday, January 17th, 2007

turned 30 today. I’m kinda nervous because of my career. I’m still not sure if I can really fully support myself through it, but at least I’ve found something that I love. And I’m entering into my thirties with a nice girl that I like a lot. So overall, doing okay I guess. :-)

and Francois sent me some exciting news about Wifidog profiles. Excellent b-day present.
