cultural imperialism

i was right.

it doesn’t really sum it up, it’s more of a ontological / epistimological imperialism (as i said before).

negroponte gave a presentation at mit about OLPC (One Laptop Per Child).

“it’s not about laptops, it’s about education”

“kids take to computing like fish do to water”

He also talked about this presentation that some guy called Papert made that must have had a large impact on him:

“On April 11, 1970, Seymour Papert held a symposium at MIT called “Teaching Children Thinking” and placed a new stake in the groundwork of epistemology. His notion was based on using computers as engines which children would teach and thus learn by teaching. He moved the locus of interest from how computers can teach to how children learn.” -from an email/article negroponte wrote in ‘94.

so imperialistic. so ballsy. and in mid-reflection I’m glad he’s trying it, even though in hindsight it might prove be a huge mistake if it actual suceeds (in changing youths way of thinking towards a rational/mechanistic on a large scale). at least he’s not paralyzed or afraid of thinking on this grand scale.

————————-
what was exciting to me about this was my train of thought. I don’t think negroponte was ever hiding his intentions about this project, but i’m excited about the way i figured it out by myself. i don’t think that it was obvious based on what was being said about it. it’s not about connectivity, it’s not about the commons, it’s not about employment in the information economy. it’s about changing how large segments of youth think.

Interesting stuff (this one and the 2 following ones about cultural imperialism). Just wanted to link to something else: the “some guy” named Papert is the inventor of Logo. A friend of mine has recently posted something about him. He makes some good observations about computers and pedagogy. I think the conversation is too centered on the hardware (ie, $100 laptop), when it is through the software that the hardware can be made to do different things, some more alienating or liberatory than others….
