LBS+LBC for wifidog

acronyms - LBS = Location-Based Services and LBC = Location-Based Content

So - from what I understand - Wifidog is gearing towards become a Location-Based Content Aggregation Presentation tool - instead of a Location Based Content Managment tool. Sounds like nothing to most of you - but it implies a very important distiction in terms of development. As Benoit says - yes, Wifidog has swallowed simple types of content - like text and jpgs because it’s *way* simplier to handle those things itself instead of aggregating them, but more and more wifdog will be responsable for aggregating and displaying content that comes from other places (both geocoded content, and possibly content from Users from other places via a third-party authentification system (like OpenID)).

I think a meeting between Jo and Benoit in London precipitated this shift in vision for wifidog. (also - i think the part of the wifidog team that thinks about content (benoit - francois - philippe)was already thinking this - but seeing Jo’s work as well as the other peoples stuff at the WSFII - probably confirmed going in that direction.

There’s some good stuff happening with wifdog these days. Getting Wireless Toronto and NYCwireless to contribute to our development process - as well as trying to make our presentation flexible enough to suit their needs. I’m optimistic about having something much more usuable (in terms of content/community) soon.

I’m glad - because I keep on shooting my mouth off about this “hacking the city”-stuff and “location based content” and I’m going to start looking like a complete blowhard. Not that that is anyone’s fault but my own.

On the LBS side other people are working on Zeroconf. I kinda thought that it was never going to take off - but after two years of hoping, i think some things are finally coming together. ex:
