vlogging

apparently it’s time for another post about vlogging. Once again - the future for vlogging is looking rosy. Publish via rss + automated bittorrent + mythtv, and make it all filterable / findable via user tagging.

I wrote about / linked about it here.

I was talking about this with Hugh yesterday (a long overdue f2f at YulBlog). And today I was got a message from Brett today who is an opencontent / creative commons / pro opensource type video person working at EyeSteel Film. They are currently doing a project called Homeless Street Archives. (I met them through that last year and then we helped them out with our wireless network in Berri parc for one of their events last year).

Me to Brett:
> really. do you have a personal site? I’m really interested in this -
> was having a great discussion last night with someone about the
> technology behind videoblogging (automating bittorrent + rss +
> filtering + mythTV)

Brett reply:
>yes - www.etherworks.ca - I’m currently the only videoblogger
>(ok ,non porn videoblogger) in the province of Quebec.

Go check it out. It has taken me a few times watching a few different vlogs over the last months to get the impact of what it was all about.

And he showed me this map of vloggers.

I have another very interesting “citizen journalist”-type post coming up sometime about that whole vlogging thing. just gotta find the time to do a little more research.

OK generally I think vlogging and “audio bloggers” (do they have a cutesy name too?) are really lame-o. Check the rant over at Idle Words for details on how lame-o it can all be.

But - I do like drivetime by Ravi Jain. So banal, which makes it so terrific. You know this guy would be multitasking while driving in traffic anyway.

not every new turn in the digital world needs be heralded with fanfare. sometimes they are just funny, or silly. anyway, I’m glad you’ve moved on from MMPORGs … I was really unsure what the fuck to say about that. I’m never going to buy virtual gold and sell it. It’s not new in economics for people to buy and sell stuff that either (a) doesn’t exist or (b) is completely a hoax. I am actually a Nigerian widow and want to transfer millions of dollars into your bank account. Contact me at my supersecret Hotmail address.

    I assume you’ve seen http://participatoryculture.org/broadcast/ ?

  3. mtl3p Says:

MK - I love your discreet, indirect way of disagreeing ;-) Actually your comment really makes me miss you.

    1) yes they do. i assume that they’re called podcasters

    2) of course they all need fanfares. Or else they would feel left out.

    3) that rant is lame. heard it all before. it doesn’t address anything important. it’s not even really funny.

4)sorry to disappoint, but I haven’t moved on from mmorpg’s. There will be more of that. Actually - I think I’m going to include that as a permenant category on my blog.

    5) You’re a Nigerian widow!? Give me your back account!! - I’ll wire the funds asap.

    Josef - I hadn’t. That’s really good stuff. Thanks!

  4. MK Says:

yeah yeah yeah, podcasting is a cute name for “making mp3s” (as someone smarter than me said to me once)

Anywayz, vlogging and blogging and podcasting is all the same as every other kind of content in that, if it’s no good, I won’t like it, and most stuff is no good. it’s just that the more people make, the harder it is for Google to separate the wheat from the chaff.

(I’m a piece of wheat, by the way)

(sigh) MMPORGs…… when I hear hype like this for pushing a bunch of virtual gold around ya know what it reminds me of? Everybody thought VR was going to be real cool, too. Lots of big VR labs were built, millions of dollars were spent, and everybody thought goggles were going to be the new hot accessory. Man, am I glad I didn’t jump on that bandwagon, even though that was in my dewy-eyed days. Now I’m just a jaded old fart that catches the tails of the trends about a million years after they’re cool. We’ll see where MMPORGs go, but personally I’m going to do the same thing I did when Flash came out and everyone was drooling over that - wait till everyone is sick of it and keep doing what I’m doing in the meantime.

My, my! I’m in a ranty mood tonight. You know that despite my vitriol, Mike, I think it’s very good that someone is paying attention to these things, so when I need some pundit-to-pundit advice I can just call you up on your hot new cellphone.

You’re more of an out-there-on-the-edge happy pundit, I’m like the cranky pundit in the corner drinking whisky. We’d be a good tv show (or vlog!!! ohmigod how sexy) acting like those two old dudes in the balcony on the Muppets.

  5. mtl3p Says:

I like it when you’re ranty. You have a permenant invitation to be a critical muppet on my blog!

I think that would be really funny. My blog could just have a little vlogcast(??) tied to each of my posts. It would be located in the top-right-hand side of each entry. And it would consist of you dismissing, criticising, or ridiculing each entry. How fun would that be!

Let me know when you want to start. I’ll ask boris if he can get started setting it up.

    ;-)

update: and I’m not being sarcastic. i think that would be pretty funny - but only because of MK’s wit.

  6. MK Says:

PS. I will even wear a fake moustache and sit in front of one of those endless fireplace videos for your MK-as-vlog-muppet idea.

Mike - you could be the first to have vlog content exclusively in comments! (Remember, I’m about a million nanoseconds behind every trend, so maybe me saying it’s a first means precious little.) Well I’ll be a monkey’s uncle - even I have to say, that would be a cool first.

  7. mtl3p Says:

    yeah! that would be sweet.

and I love the idea of commenting via vlogs. someone’s got to do that!

  8. Brett Gaylor Says:

    Check this site out:
    http://www.blogcheese.com/etherworks/

and go to the comments. If you have a video camera installed, you can record a video.

But make sure you have something super cool to say or that Nigerian grumpy guy will be all over you.

  9. mtl3p Says:

Hey brett! Don’t worry about the nigerian. She’s all bark.

Very cool site. But did you just set that up to test this? Or did it (videocommenting) already exist?

And I don’t have a video camera - but I might be able to fix that ;-)

  10. MK Says:

    bark bark

  11. Brett Gaylor Says:

no, its been an idea floating around the vlogosphere for a while. But I think that these blogcheese folks are among the first to implement. My only problem is that it uses flash - sort of a closed format, and you have to have their media server to make cool stuff like that work.
