my new “new favorite word”
i mean acronym:
PLIM
Presence
Location
Instant Messaging
I’ve been keeping this idea alive for wifidog for 2 1/2 years now. Out of the three, I think the IM is the least important feature for the ISF network.
Doing some research for my presentation this afternoon. I’m reading this pdf: Presence, location and instant messaging in a contextaware application framework A.J.H. Peddemors, M.M. Lankhorst, J. de Heer
They are using bluetooth to determine location at room level granularity. “The PLIM server is based on the existing Jabber instant messaging platform [7]. In the Jabber environment, the IM client connects to the IM server where the user is registered. The communication between client and server is based on the exchange of messages formatted in XML. The server communicates with other servers in order to watch or update presence information and sends and receives messages to and from users that are registered at the other servers. As such, the combined Jabber servers form a distributed network. The primary functionality used for the PLIM framework is the publish-subscribe mechanism that handles the distribution of presence data. ”
I think I have a big crush on Jabber. I don’t know it well enough to tell if it’s going to blossom into a real relationship, but whenever I see it my hands get kinda sweaty and I start to fidget. It sends all it’s messages in xml so it can be made to do a lot of stuff, methinks.
Montreal Jabber geeks, where are you!!
