In Winnipeg

so I’m at the conference. But before I talk about the conference - two funny/strange things.

First, after I was invited, I was asked if it was possible that I handle the wireless network for the conference attendees. I said yes, and the next thing i know I was asked to bring switches for people without wifi, cables for all of the rooms, etc. So I ended up bringing 9 linksys routers and a couple hundred feet of cable along with crimpers, connectors. Then they turned around and included us as one of their sponsors. So in the booklet that everyone gets ISF is thanked as a sponsor along with 3 other bodies:

-The Government of Canada (mentioning in small text Foreign Affaires Canada, Industry Canada, Canadian Heritage, and HRSDC)
-IDRC
-Canadian Council for the Arts

And the ISF logo is as big as the rest of them. Pretty odd to look at (as a member of ISF).

The other weird thing was that I was obviously concerned with transporting all of these routers. The gate person let me not check it, but then I had to go through the security checkpoint. I immediately got a lot of attention, and there were three security people hovering over me. When I explained that I was setting up a wireless network at a conference one of the guards asked “Is that that new wireless technology?”. I said yes and that I was part of a group that setup wireless public networks in Montreal and he replied, “Oh yes, I’ve heard of you. I watched it on TV”, gave me a smile, and waved me through.

I’m impressed with the sponsorship element — I hope the setup of routers went well. Say hello to all the CRACIN-heads for me and let’s remember to debrief when we both get back.

    you got it.

the setup is going well. you should see the poster that they put up of ours.

BTW- I’m going to ask Leslie to pay me to write something that documents ISF practices so that it can be learned from by other groups.

And we should talk about the montreal wifi cracin conference. i’m seeing the point of it more and more.

    WSIS, censorship & RSF

Michael is in Winnipeg participating in a UNESCO sponsored conference in preparation for it’s presence at the WSIS summit in Tunisia in the fall. This is serious, big boys stuff. ;) He just reported something VERY disturbing: The Tunisian ambassador…
