Why didn’t I think of this? Martin Lessard makes the simple, obvious, and brilliant observation that wiki’s are palimpsests. Def of palimpsest is here (or if wikipedia is still down - go here). I hope wikipedia is back up by the time you all read this - I think it’s very cool for you to look up the definition of a palimpsest on an actual palimpsest.
I looked around google, and I can’t find anybody else referring to wiki’s as palimpsests, so maybe he’s the first? Crazy.

Heh… when I installed my personal wiki over a year ago I called it “Palimpsest”. I proceeded to not use it at all and ditched it when I moved servers…

Well, I looked through all 6 google pages of search returns and there’s one other person that talks about wiki’s being palimpsests

And he doesn’t actually do anything with the concept -he just mentions palimpsests as a metaphor for understanding wiki’s.

Oh, yeah - Martin - I stole your idea and emailed this community informatics mailing list about it and about the quipu/hypertext thing. But I included the link to the blog entry which attributes you. And I didn’t claim the idea as mine, I just mentioned them both quickly in a 4 sentence paragraph.
