Lot’s ‘o Links

Okay . . . I was at Communautique’s launch of their new website for community groups (Nico gives a brief description of the site here).

Besides Nico, there was Sylvain, Eric Abitbol (the mastermind behind University de la Rue Cafe), Benoit (the mastermind behind ISF) , Kenneth Werbin (Ph.d candidate with CRACIN), Alison, StÈphane Couture (Ph.d candidate / OSS geek currently resurrecting LabCMO), Denis Boudreau from W3Q, and Maxime PichÈ (who recently moderated a few interesting discussions). I think I missed one or two people.

I think that we’re starting to become quite the merry little band. We’re kind of like decentralized band of technology do-gooders. Or maybe the band was there before and I’m finally making some friends in this domain.

After the presentation a bunch of us got together for a 10 minute discussion on organizing a Penguin Day in Montreal. Penguin days are a chance for the third sector (OSBL) people to engage with local OSS people (inc. social software, web accessibility, etc) people.

“Penguin Day Toronto featured spirited discussion about how to bridge language and cultural gaps between open source developers and nonprofits, hands-on sessions on content management systems for organizations, real-life stories of nonprofits using open source tools, and another speed-geek — a hilarious, fast-paced presentations of different software applications for non-profits.”

Mark Surman helped organize the one in Toronto and he’s very keen on us doing the same here. With all of the energy we felt in that room today, I have little doubt.
