Wireless city tidbits

Muniwireless reports on Fredricton:

“Fredericton, Canada (pop. 80,000) is building a citywide wireless broadband network that will be free of charge to users . . .”

As I understand it, one of the conditions that made this happen is an earlier initiative to lay municipally-owned fiber around the city.

Why is this news now? (it was announced last year) - maybe they sent out a press release - or maybe it’s a slow news day. Here’s the current state of the project:

“The network footprint so far encompasses about 30 percent of the area the city envisions eventually covering. It will deploy another 60 to 90 access points before the end of the summer, which will mark the end of the project’s first phase.”

Secondly, there’s a petition going around about getting some free wireless loving from our own municipal leaders (sp. Parc Lafontaine). Check it.

This is great news! [Park LaFontain) Petition Signed thank you!

As far as Fredericton goes, (although old news to some..new to me heh) it is great to see public and government backing in a project of this type. Although not surprising with 2 Universities and an art college - it should be a great testing ground. Too bad it wasnt set up when i was going to school there.

Funny, I was in Fredericton for the first time on the day you wrote this, and got to try it out. Unfortunately my card could find and connect to the network but wouldn’t let any traffic through. It’s the second time this has happened to me. Maybe something’s wrong with my system. Or me.
