the anti-ipod
No, I’m not griping about the batteries. And I don’t mean this (as much as I love it).
I’ve been getting laughed at for using my laptop as a very expensive, very heavy, mp3 player. I just disable the power controls and leave my headset plugged in as I bike around. My main fear is not getting handed a mocking, but wiping-out and trashing my comp.

i would suggest a laptop bag for starters, something with closed-cell foam, high-impact plastic, whatever. i would then build and connect a metal or extremely rugged plastic sheath attached tightly (or sautered, perhaps) to the bike itself. up high, or you’ll get too many Gs from the shocks.
wipeout would be bad - enough curbs and potholes though could end up with the same result. if you had a impact-resistant bag that could slide into a pannier or some other kind of sheath.. that’d do the trick
(or, uh, you could just buy an ipod)

That’s pretty hardcore, man. I think I need a diagram. Coming from the man who broke two ikea chairs, I would be cautiously optimistic about any design you suggest. Nothin personal ;)
cool site.

No, no. Though I broke two Ikea frames, I eventually vanquished the single Ikea chair.
And is it my fault that Ikea furniture is constructed with cruelty as a key design goal?

An Ipod can hold 10,000 songs and thats about 30,000 minutes (3 min/song). Theres only 1440 minutes in a day. Whose gonna listen for 30,000. Your probably only gonna listen to a couple of hundred songs. You can just get a normal mp3 player and download the songs ur gonna listen from ur PC

You could strap your laptop to your chest and use it as a bulletproof vest:)
At least you can change the battery on the laptop…
Get a ZEN with a removable battery. You can use the software as a virtual Hi-MD walkman (i.e. you can record any audio source [incl. DVD], as long as you have the inputs, up to WAV, unless it has bastard copyright protection).
By the way “Jason”, that was an incredibly insightful post; just what I’ve come to expect from iPod owners.
