Identity Collapse

So I was hanging out with Boris again tonight. We’ve stomped over the familiar ground that people have identities with different people and with the same people over different mediums. Tonight the idea came up that a person’s identities have a natural desire to collapse. That doesn’t mean that there are not good reasons to keep identities separate (like splitting up into two blogs because of different audiences, or not being “out” at work) but there is a tension to merge one’s identities. I’m sure that someone smarter than me has has tied together Goffman’s identity theory with the desire for psychological wholeness, but I couldn’t find it, so I’m throwing it up here.
